50th+1: Saturday Night Dinner Dance

The Country Club of Darien was the perfect venue – a big hallway to mingle in and enjoy drinks and hors d’oeuvres, a delicious buffet and seating at tables that were invitingly close, and a beckoning dance floor with groovy lights and non-stop music from OUR era, provided by DJ Anthony Radice.

We made a frame (stole the idea from the Class of 1972’s reunion a few weeks earlier), which got a lot of use throughout the weekend. Although the plan was to get each and every person as they arrived to the dinner-dance, the crowd pressed forward and we missed quite a few…sorry!

Still fitting into his Temptations jacket from the senior year talent show, Hayes Clark did another great job as emcee, first thanking the hardworking reunion committee (Come on, two years of zoom meetings with Gail keeping people focused…?!), leading a moment of reflection remembering those classmates who have departed, and then humorously reporting on commonalities from the questionnaire responses. (Questionnaires still being accepted until the end of December 2022.)

The music was nonstop, just one great song after another. Our allotted time at the country club ended at 11pm, but at 11:15, there was a still a nice crowd of 31 dancing diehards! The DJ put on our class song, “Teach Your Children,” to wrap things up before a final group picture.

As we danced and sang along, everyone in the group began to spontaneously hold hands, forming a dancing ring that organically moved, pulsing in and out, holding hands and singing…for the entire song! It was a real, love-filled moment…

Here’s a video that captured the scene, by our own videographer, Matt Scott.
